After spending several unforgettable days in Entebbe, it was time to continue our journey into the heart of Uganda. Between the warm hospitality at Tezor Hotel, a rejuvenating spa day at Bravado Spa, and fresh styling at Ikiz Beauty, I had already fallen in love with the charm of Entebbe. Yet, the adventure I had been anticipating most was still ahead.
Our destination was Masaka, Uganda—the region my family calls home. I was excited to experience the place where so many family stories began, but looking back, I realize I was completely unprepared for the beauty, warmth, and sense of connection I would discover there. Although my visit was brief, Masaka left an indelible mark on my heart, and I am already looking forward to returning.
The Journey from Entebbe to Masaka, Uganda

The road trip from Entebbe to Masaka is much more than a drive—it's a journey through the changing landscapes and rhythms of Uganda. As we left Entebbe behind, the organized business districts gradually gave way to bustling city markets before opening into rolling green hills and expansive countryside. Along the way, I noticed crews working on roadway improvements, and I couldn't help but imagine the opportunities these investments will create for communities throughout the region.
The traffic itself was an adventure. Organized chaos might be the best way to describe it. Vehicles, pedestrians, and motorcycles seemed to move together in a rhythm that somehow worked, even if I couldn't quite understand it. I was grateful to have my husband behind the wheel. Watching him confidently navigate the roads, I admitted I wasn't sure I could ever drive in Uganda myself. He simply smiled and assured me that with enough time, I'd learn. On that note, if you aren't comfortable driving in Uganda, consider hiring a private driver for longer trips between Entebbe, Kampala, and Masaka. It allows you to enjoy the scenery while someone familiar with local traffic handles the navigation.
One of the most fascinating parts of the drive was my introduction to boda bodas—the motorcycles that serve as the lifeblood of transportation throughout Uganda. These versatile vehicles carry everything from entire families to fresh produce and even crates of live chickens. Their ability to weave through traffic with remarkable efficiency is something every visitor quickly comes to appreciate.
As the traffic gradually thinned, the scenery transformed once again. Rolling hills stretched into the distance, farms dotted the landscape, and lush greenery surrounded us in every direction. Having lived in Arizona for nearly a decade, I couldn't help but appreciate how vibrant and alive everything felt. The cooler temperatures, birdsong, and peaceful countryside were a beautiful reminder of how dramatically landscapes can shape the travel experience.
Visiting the Famous Equator Sign
No Uganda travel itinerary would feel complete without stopping at the famous Equator Sign in Kayabwe, located approximately 45 miles from Kampala.
It's the perfect place to stretch your legs, browse local artisan shops, purchase handcrafted souvenirs, and enjoy a quick meal before continuing your journey. Standing with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and the other in the Southern Hemisphere made for a memorable photo opportunity, but it also symbolized something more. As we crossed the Equator, it truly felt like we were stepping into a new chapter of our adventure.

Hillview Primary School: A Heartwarming Connection
Traveling with my step-children made this journey even more meaningful. Shortly after arriving in Masaka, our first stop was Hillview Primary School, where they attend school.
Although I had previously seen photos and videos, nothing could have prepared me for the breathtaking views from the school's upper level. Looking out across the lush hillsides, I couldn't help but think what an incredible place it must be for students to learn and grow each day.
The staff welcomed us warmly. Their student's English was exceptional, and they eagerly guided me around campus while helping translate conversations whenever needed. Since the teachers had just concluded the school term, we were fortunate enough to enjoy a quiet, personal tour of the campus.
rMore than anything, the visit challenged many of my preconceived ideas about boarding schools. Rather than feeling institutional, Hillview felt like a close-knit community where students genuinely supported one another. I left inspired by the emphasis on connection, responsibility, and shared experience, reflecting on how aspects of this educational model might benefit schools in the United States.
Where to Stay in Masaka: Golden Hotel Masaka
For our two-night stay in Masaka, we chose the Golden Hotel Masaka, and it proved to be an excellent home base for exploring the region.
The hotel felt modern and exceptionally clean. The air conditioning provided welcome relief after warm afternoons exploring, the hot showers were appreciated after long days on the road, and the beautifully maintained grounds reflected the pride the staff takes in the property.
Perched atop one of Masaka's hills, the hotel rewards guests with sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, particularly from its rooftop bar. While the steep approach may require a little extra effort, the scenery makes every step worthwhile.

Exploring Masaka Town
One of my favorite parts of visiting Masaka was simply slowing down enough to experience everyday life.
Compared to the fast-paced energy of Kampala and Entebbe, Masaka has a calmer rhythm that immediately puts you at ease. We wandered through local shops, watched street vendors serving customers, and enjoyed conversations with friendly residents going about their daily routines.
One of our favorite discoveries was a vendor selling bags of freshly popped popcorn. We purchased several bags to snack on during the rest of our day's adventures. Sometimes it's these simple, unexpected moments that become the memories you treasure most.
Rather than rushing from one attraction to another, I found myself appreciating the everyday details—the slower pace, the welcoming smiles, and the sense of community that makes Masaka feel authentic rather than touristy.

Carry small denominations of Ugandan shillings when stopping at roadside markets or local vendors.
A Taste of Local Flavors
No visit to Masaka would have been complete without sampling the local food.
One of the culinary highlights of our stay was visiting a popular local pork joint, where freshly prepared pork was fried until perfectly crisp before being tossed with onions, peppers, tomatoes, and aromatic spices.
The aroma alone was enough to draw a crowd. eveAs ning approached, locals gathered around the restaurant, chatting with friends and patiently waiting for fresh batches to come off the fryer. It wasn't simply a meal—it was a social gathering and another reminder that food has an incredible way of bringing people together. Experiencing Uganda's local cuisine gave me an even deeper appreciation for the culture and hospitality that define this remarkable country.
Reflection: Why Returning Matters
Visiting Masaka reminded me that the most meaningful travel experiences rarely come from checking attractions off a list. They come from slowing down, connecting with people, and allowing a destination to surprise you.
