There is no torture quite like the feeling of travel plans being completely derailed. You’ve put in the time, navigated the airports, and now you’re stuck, frustrated, and nowhere near your final destination. That was me, fresh off a long journey from Maricopa to LAX, only to find myself facing a series of setbacks. My attempt at an overnight stay at the Hyatt Regency LAX was a failure, my man was gone, the California Rail pass was not an option, I just wanted to go home and get in my own bed.  Now, I was determined to make that happen.

What if I told you that moment of frustration led to a perfect, unexpected discovery of the California coast? Stick with me, and I’ll explain how a stunning oceanside sunset, a well-timed call from my love, and a last-minute booking at a charming boutique hotel turned a disastrous day into a memory of profound peace and solitude. This is how you turn lemons into lemonade on the CA Coast.

From Setback to San Clemente

After the travel chaos, the first win of the day was securing a last-minute set of wheels. Thanks to a "Manager's Special" from Hertz, I was finally pointed south, determined to salvage the trip. That's when things began to turn around—literally and figuratively.   I was edging my way south from LA toward San Diego when my husband called.  He had finally boarded his flight and was making his last call before take off.  I was instantly calmed and excited for him.  He told me that I had no business driving back to Arizona that night, and that if it wasn’t LA, I needed to stay somewhere close and rest.  He was right.  I try to listen to him most of the time, so that he is not the first suspect should I come up missing.

The real moment of transformation, however, came with the sunset at the Las Flores viewpoint off the I-5. I found the most perfect oceanside viewpoint of the freeway, painting the sky with a feeling of peace and solitude I hadn't known I needed. It was an overwhelming sense of calm that washed away the day’s stress. The low-tide drive, the salty air, and the sheer relief of having a new destination led to a quick Expedia reservation, pulling me off the main road and into the quaint town of San Clemente.

A Perfect Oceanside Solitude

The moment I arrived at the Casa Blanca Inn, I knew I’d found something special. The warm reception and the cozy, salt-air freshness of the hotel were an immediate balm to my frazzled nerves. It was a complete contrast to the troubled times I had experienced earlier. It was here, during this spontaneous stop, that I realized the true essence of turning things around.

I would learn my booking would include one of their newly renovated deluxe rooms. I noticed they also had rooms with balconies that still carried the original design, awaiting to be renovated.  Nevertheless they were sold out.  I met a young bride in the lobby. Her new husband, a Marine, stood patiently in the courtyard in full uniform.   An adorable couple who had a block of rooms reserved for the wedding party, now needed an additional room for the newlyweds.  They were truly an adorable couple with a destination wedding, and I learned there was a base nearby. After check in I was followed by an older couple.  I made a note that I too would need to return with my better half. Here are a few picks I snapped ahead of check out the next morning.

A Taste of the Coast

I placed an order for takeout at the nearby Fisherman’s Wharf restaurant.  Living in the desert, I was dying for some fresh seafood, which my husband hates, so this was the perfect opportunity.  I ordered the salmon fettuccini. It was a culinary moment of pure bliss, a final punctuation mark on a day that started with chaos but ended with perfection. It was beyond dark when I arrived to the pier. The only thing I could tell for sure was that parking was limited, and the restaurant is just a short walk to the pier for retrieval. I would have to return to see all that the San Clemente pier had to offer to the pampered eye.

The Quaint Treasure of San Clemente

The sunset and the peaceful ocean setting provided me with a sense of calm I didn’t know I lacked. Because of this stop, I was able to discover a great restaurant, a charming town, and a beautiful boutique hotel. The Town of San Clemente is, without a doubt, a quaint, beautiful treasure. I would highly recommend this short getaway for couples, so much so that I would return with my husband.  I would obtain all of the pictures I missed walking around in the evening.
